For this recent attic renovation project in Bryn Mawr, PA, we started with demolition steps. First, we pulled up the carpet. We then removed the old door and window frames, and the baseboards. Next, we took down the pickled oak toned paneling from the ceiling and the dark blue paneling from the walls.
All the insulation was replaced, providing improved heating and cooling efficiency. And newly installed recessed lights in the ceiling, wall sconces, and new wall outlets provided much-needed light in this originally darker attic space.
Next, we installed drywall on the ceiling and walls, except for two ends of the room where we put in shiplap boards. The shiplap adds focal interest to the room. Nice, new baseboards, as well as new door and window frames were another upgrade, which we then filled the nail holes and caulked the gaps.
The next phase was the pre-engineered flooring. The client chose “LifeProof” Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) flooring in a style known as Chiffon Lace Oak. By replacing the carpet with LVP, the clients have a cleaner living area less prone to allergens. It also adds a modern aesthetic and can be easier to keep clean.
Finally, we applied the paint. The walls and ceiling were painted with one full coat of drywall primer and then received two finish coats of Sherwin Williams’ interior “Emerald” in an Extra White matte finish. The doors, windows, baseboards and shiplap were also done with Sherwin Williams’ “Emerald” line, but this time in an Extra White semi-gloss finish.
The resulting effect after removing the pickled oak and navy paneling and adding freshly painted white drywall and trim work is a larger, brighter space ready for guests or a multitude of other uses.
