Sometimes you have a great kitchen, but you just don’t love your cabinets. It would be great to replace them all with gorgeous new cabinets that match your taste perfectly, but that is a full-blown construction project. You can expect to be displaced from your kitchen for quite some time while your cabinets are torn down. Repairing the walls, ordering your new cabinets, arriving and hanging them, and additional repairs will take forever. Then you still likely must paint the room to erase the effects of the construction project and best highlight your brand-new cabinets.
In the end, this will certainly provide you with a great result and a kitchen you will love, but this route is not for everyone. Besides the amount of time involved, there also comes a hefty price tag when replacing all your cabinets. Especially since COVID-19, construction costs have gone up exponentially. There is also a bit of a wait with supplies still being on backorder. This is a big consideration when choosing how best to go about getting a kitchen that makes you happy.
Alternative to Cabinet Replacement
Another option that works very well for our clients is to have us paint your kitchen cabinets. There is still a certain amount of time when you won’t have full use of your kitchen area. However, it is greatly reduced compared to a kitchen cabinet tear-down and new installation. Certain items need to be removed from inside and surrounding areas, but less than having all cabinets removed from your walls.
The Royersford Project
What happens next in most cases and in the case of the kitchen cabinet makeover we did for our client in Royersford, was removing all of the knobs and hinges from his dark wood cabinets to keep them free of paint. We then removed the drawer fronts and thoroughly scrubbed all the cabinets, doors, and drawer fronts with an abrasive pad and degreaser. The cabinets must be very clean and free from all dirt, cooking grease, and food splashes for proper adhesion.
We then fill the old knob holes with wood fill, and sand them smoothly. The next step is to thoroughly sand all cabinet pieces, doors, etc., and wipe them down with a clean, damp cloth to remove all sanding dust. These two steps are also imperative for good adhesion of the cabinet coating system.
After this, we applied one full coat of Sherwin Williams’ “Extreme Bond” primer, which we sprayed on with a fine finish spray tip. Then we applied two coats of Sherwin Williams’ “Urethane Acrylic” kitchen cabinet finish paint, also using a fine finish spray tip.
The final step was to rehang the doors and drawer fronts, then install the new knobs and pulls the client had chosen. As you can see, it was his wish to take his cabinets from their dark brown wood tone to a medium gray finish. His choice in color was Sherwin Williams’ “Gibraltar” G257 in a gloss finish. We are happy to say he was thrilled with the results, and we are happy to have a new repeat customer!
